Sometimes experiments yield the results we want and sometimes they don’t. However, you’ll never know if you don’t give it a try…

I started testing a new plugin I found by accident… WP Backup to Dropbox. http://wpb2d.com/

So far, I really like it! I am a fan of Dropbox to begin with, but I am also a fanatic of backing up and updating my websites regularly. So, this plugin seemed like a great potential tool to add to my arsenal for my sites, as well as other sites I care for.

Here are the features I like & am testing out:
- You can choose how often to back up your site & it is supposed to do it automatically
- After the initial full backup, future backups go faster, as they only change the files that are new or have been updated on your server
- It should run in the background, syncing up with the Dropbox folder I specified, causing less burden on my computer’s resources

If this plugin works as it says, this could be a HUGE timesaver for me. When I do my monthly website backups via ftp or cpanel, I usually need to be near my computer to monitor and ensure everything is transferring smoothly. There are nine or ten websites I backup each month. Even small sites can take significant amounts of time to monitor. For my clients that already use Dropbox, this could be a great addition to their sites, saving me time and saving them money. )

This plugin is currently free, but there are some premium upgrades that can be purchased. First, is the zipped folder upgrade, which is useful if you want to keep an additional backup of your files in another location on your computer. They also offer another upgrade that will send you a message telling you when a backup has been completed. I haven’t purchased these upgrades since I’m still testing the free features, but they sound like a good idea for the future.

I’ll report back after testing is complete – with my final review of this plugin. Stay tuned…

Alicia

Look at the top box in the right corner or your screen. This is usually where the Publish Settings can be found for your page. Here is an explanation of the basic Publishing Features you can customize:

“Save Draft” – Use this option is you are not ready for this page to be seen on your website yet. This is good to use while you are working on it and do not want to lose your changes. Save the draft often.

“Preview” – Once you have saved the draft at least once, the PREVIEW button becomes available. This lets you see how the page will appear on your site, without publishing it and making it live where others can see it too.

“Status” – You have three options in this part. (1) Draft – saved, but not published, (2) Pending – this lets the website owner or other authors know that this page is finished and is waiting on approval before it can be posted (Once the page is is published, you will see a third option in that drop-down box, “Published,” which means the page is “live” and can be seen by site visitors). ** When you have selected the Status Option you desire, click the OK button.

“Visibility” – You have three options here. (1) Public (can be seen by all website visitors), (2) Password Protected (can only be seen by those with a WordPress login & password for your site), or (3) Private (can only be seen by the author of the page). Choose the option you desire, then click OK.

“Scheduling” – Scheduling options are found beside the Calender Icon. The default option is to publish the page immediately after pressing the “Publish” button. You can change the date and time of page publication with this setting. Set it to the date and time you desire and click OK.

“Publish” – After clicking the Publish button, your page is now “Live” and can be seen using the options you specified. If you set this page to become active at a future date, you can view it in its draft form, but will not be “Live” until the specified date and time. **IMPORTANT: When scheduling pages to appear in the future, you must click the Publish button or they will not appear at the date and time you requested.

Once you have published, then your page creation is done.

Home is the main page of your Dashboard (we saw this in step 1 of this tutorial). Updates will show you if there are any themes, plugins, or WordPress software to be updated. For now, do not update anything. That will be covered in a future tutorial.
If you click: APPROVE —> The comment will appear on your site.
If you click: REPLY —> You will respond to the comment on your blog post or page.
If you click QUICK EDIT —> You can edit the comment on the COMMENTS page (Good for short comments).
If you click EDIT —> WordPress will load a fresh page where you can edit just one comment (Good for longer comments).
If you click SPAM —> The comment is flagged as spam and will block any future commenting attempts from that specific author.
If you click TRASH —> The comment will be removed from the COMMENTS page and will be sent to the Trash.

The links beneath this tab may change depending on which theme you have selected. If HDS or Vaagogo customized your WordPress site, then you will not need to worry about these options, unless you choose to re-design your site with a new theme. But, here is a quick description of each link just in case you are curious.

Themes —> Will show you all the themes you can choose for your site. Only one theme may be active at a time.
Widgets —> This is the link you will need if you decide to change anything on the sidebar (left or right column) of your site.
Menus —> Click this to create a custom menu in WordPress.
Theme Options —> Allows you to edit options that are specific to your theme.
Background —> You can change your site’s background here.
Header —> You can change your site’s header image here.
Editor —> This is where you (or your web developer) can edit the code of your website to make permanent changes to how your website works. As a friendly suggestion, you should not edit anything here unless you know exactly what you are doing. Mistakes made here may be difficult to correct if they break your site.

Plugins Tab

Plugins are small little sets of code that are installed on your website to make it do something you specifically need. The two plugins that come with your WordPress software are called Akismet and Hello Dolly. Akismet helps protect your site from spam (but requires an API Key from WordPress online). Hello Dolly will show quotes from the movie ‘Hello Dolly" on your Dashboard.

If HDS or Vaagogo customized your site, you may have more plugins listed on this tab. You can Activate, Edit, or Delete plugins from this tab as well.

Installed Plugins lists all the available plugins on your site.
Add New allows you to add a new plugin to your site (there is a large collection of free ones that you can search through your dashboard).
Editor – This is similar to the Editor on the Appearance Tab, except this is where you can edit the code of your plugins to make them permanently behave differently. Again, do not edit anything unless you know what you are doing. Mistakes here may be difficult to correct and can break your site.

Users tab

On the USERS Tab, you can:
List all the users of your site by clicking on "All Users."
"Add New" allows you to create a new user.
"Your Profile" is where you can edit information about you.

You can set permissions for each of your website users based on how much access you want them to have to your site. This is helpful if you have writers other than yourself posting on your blog.

Tools Tab

The Tools Tab has a couple features built in. Press this is used for blogging when you find something interesting online and want to share it on your blog. Categories and Tags Converter can convert all your Categories to Tags or All Your Tags to Categories.

Of special importance…
There is an EXPORT and IMPORT feature on the Tools Tab. Export is a way to back up all the information on your site. Import is a good way to restore all your information to your site if your site needs to be repaired and data is lost. It is suggested that you use the EXPORT feature regularly as part of your backing up your website before you upgrade the WordPress Software (this will be covered in a later tutorial).

Settings Tab

On the SETTINGS Tab, there are a variety of settings that control the way your website operates. Each link controls a different set of features. You may want to click each link to see what information is there while reviewing this step of the tutorial.

General —> You can edit such features as your Site Title, Tagline, URL, Email Address, Membership, New User Default Role, Time Zone, and Date, Time, and Week Start Settings.
Writing —> Allows you to adjust settings that affect you as you are writing and publishing posts.
Reading —> This feature allows you to select what the front page of your site shows, the number of blog posts that will appear on the main blog page, as well as Syndication and Feed Settings.
Discussion —> By clicking this, you can change the settings for the Comment system within WordPress.
Media —> Click here to edit the dimensions of your image settings, embed settings, as well as your default folder for uploading media.
Privacy —> You can choose one of two choices by clicking this:
1. I would like my site to be visible to everyone, including search engines (like Google, Bing, Technorati) and archivers; OR
2. I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors.
Permalinks —> This link allows you to change the way your web pages and posts appear on browser windows.

Under the "Posts" Tab, click "Add New"

Fill in the Basic Information

Fill in the (1) Title of the Post, (2) The information you would like on the post, (3) an Excerpt (OPTIONAL), the (4) Categories (OPTONAL), (5) Tags (OPTIONAL). Some themes also have the (6) Featured Image Section – If your theme has that feature, then you can do that part too. Your theme may also have other features that need to be completed with your post. If so, they will be below the area you can see in the screenshot. Many are optional, but help your blog to function the way you desire, as well as improve your search engine ranking.

Publishing Options

Look at the top box in the right corner or your screen. This is usually where the Publish Settings can be found for your post. Here is an explanation of the basic Publishing Features you can customize:

"Save Draft" – Use this option is you are not ready for this post to be seen on your website yet. This is good to use while you are working on it and do not want to lose your changes. Save the draft often.

"Preview" – Once you have saved the draft at least once, the PREVIEW button becomes available. This lets you see how the post will appear on your site, without publishing it and making it live where others can see it too.

"Status" – You have three options in this part. (1) Draft – saved, but not published, (2) Pending – this lets the website owner or other authors know that this post is finished and is waiting on approval before it can be posted (Once the page is is published, you will see a third option in that drop-down box, "Published," which means the post is "live" and can be seen by site visitors). ** When you have selected the Status Option you desire, click the OK button.

"Visibility" – You have three options here. (1) Public (can be seen by all website visitors), (2) Password Protected (can only be seen by those with a WordPress login & password for your site), or (3) Private (can only be seen by the author of the post). Choose the option you desire, then click OK.

"Scheduling" – Scheduling options are found beside the Calender Icon. The default option is to publish the post immediately after pressing the "Publish" button. You can change the date and time of page publication with this setting. Set it to the date and time you desire and click OK.

"Publish" – After clicking the Publish button, your post is now "Live" and can be seen using the options you specified. If you set this post to become active at a future date, you can view it in its draft form, but will not be "Live" until the specified date and time. **IMPORTANT: When scheduling pages to appear in the future, you must click the Publish button or they will not appear at the date and time you requested.

Once you have published, then your post creation is done.
